Aeon’s Alliance Addition has won a “Top Project of 2010” award from Finance & Commerce, the publication announced today. Alliance Addition was designed by Cermak Rhoades Architects and constructed by Weis Builders, Inc. (Read the official announcement from Finance & Commerce)
Alliance Addition opened in November 2010 and provides 61 high-quality and affordable apartment homes for formerly homeless individuals. The development features a newly constructed, five-story building, along with a 107-year-old former duplex that was completely rehabilitated and renovated to create 10 single-occupancy units.
Residents at Alliance Addition are given support via the sober living model of the existing Alliance Apartments, in partnership with service provider RS Eden. Efficient and cost-effective design features ensure that every Alliance resident has access to RS Eden case managers, along with shared indoor community space, a landscaped courtyard, resource rooms and front desk amenities.
Alliance Addition’s new construction has been awarded LEED™ Platinum certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), making the development the first in Minnesota to be LEED for Homes™ certified through the LEED Multifamily Midrise rating system (which focuses on four- to six-story buildings). The building is one of only two five-story, residential buildings in the country to use Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPs), which provide far better insulation than standard stud wall construction.
Other sustainable features of Alliance Addition include white roofs, high-efficiency windows, EnergyStar appliances, lighting sensors and dimmers, and storm-water management (through a green roof and native plants). Low-VOC finishes and linoleum in apartments (rather than carpet) improves indoor air quality. The property features a Mitsubishi split-system for heating and cooling, sharing energy between units such that surplus heat can be “borrowed” before new energy is expended.
Aeon partnered with the University of Minnesota's Center for Sustainable Building Research and the Center for Energy & Environment on Alliance Addition. Steen Engineering was also part of the development's integrated design team.
